365 Project

I have been asked a couple of times what this 365 thing is I do and why do I do it.

Well let me tell you how it all began for me and why I decided to do it.

Many years ago I made an online friend by the name of Donna (Hi Donna :D ). Well one day my lovely friend started posting self portraits on her blog and kept referring to this 365 Days project and Flickr. So as a curious person I decided to check it out.

What I found out was there was a huge community of people on Flickr in many different groups participating in this project. Some people did self portraits, others took photos of all different kinds of things. But the basic idea was to take a photo every day for 1 year. There are many people I know how are into their 7th year of the project. There are also many different groups that like to put a "spin" on the portraits by posting themes chosen by members.

Now as first I was terrified of partaking such a huge thing like this. For a few reasons.

  1. I absolutely LOATHED my photo being taken. I was overweight at the time and had very low self esteem.
  2. I didn't really know how to use my camera. I was blown away by the quality and talent of the people I saw on Flickr and just knew I couldn't come close to them.
  3. I really didn't think I could be creative.
But after a while I finally decided to bite the bullet and try it. The main reason I wanted to do it was so I could gain confidence in front of the camera.

Here is my very first 365 portrait taken on April 7th 2008 with my laptop's webcam:

01/365

Thankfully I was having a good hair day that day! I went on to take 96 photos in that first attempt before stopping. I used either my webcam, my Fuji Finepix or my cell phone camera. During that time I did get a small Canon point & shoot so I had a good camera with me at all times. Here are all of the photos from my first attempt. Some of them may seem quite random, but that's because of the themes for the groups I was in.

I stopped for a few days then restarted on July 26th 2008, hoping to finish that time. I didn't. I made it to 63 photos before stopping. BUT I kind of had a good excuse. We moved from Australia to the USA and we were a little busy! Lol. Here are those shots:

My third attempt began in October 2008 and I managed 71 photos that time. I actually made it till the end of the year and then decided to restart from Jan 1st. Here is the 3rd attempts photos:

My 4th attempt was by longest ever. 252 photos. I missed a few days here and there but I got to the middle of September before giving up entirely for that round.

In January 2010 I decided to try again. This time I only lasted 10 days. Not a great start.

I had a couple of false starts throughout the next year or so but nothing ever stuck. It wasn't until I started losing weight last year that I realised it would be so much more fun doing it when I wasn't so worried about how I looked. So I decided to restart this year after having lost around 60lb. So I restarted on Jan 1st this year and am thoroughly enjoying it. I haven't missed 1 day and have even gotten a couple of photos in Flickr Explore which is so very awesome!

Here is my current project, not 1 day missed so far!

If anyone has any questions about the project or anything please comment below. Most of them are taken either with my tripod and remote or by balancing the camera on something. I want a Gorillapod so badly! And contrary to what some people think, I don't spend all day taking photos of myself. I usually spend 5-10 minutes on my shots. That includes editing and uploading.
